Study of Lotus Blossoms
by Hua Yan
Dated 1726
Ink and color on silk
|
Floral motifs play a very important role in Chinese art.
While these motifs are sometimes merely decorative, more often
they represent hidden meanings and symbolize a wish
for all the good things in life.
Plants are traditionally chosen for their beauty, fragrance, and symbolic meanings.
The peony is symbolic of wealth and rank while the bamboo symbolizes the scholar
gentleman and the lotus is
the flower of purity and integrity. This
exhibition covers many centuries of Chinese painting from the Study of Lotus
Blossoms by Hua Yan dated 1726 to the Lotus by Huang Yongyu dated 1984.
