A Pair of Rule-shaped Iron Paperweights with Silver Inlay, Mid-Ming dynasty
This pair of paperweights was cast from iron. The top is adorned with a vine motif on both ends and the geometric pattern with swastikas (Chinese wan symbol), also called key fret, in the center. The key fret geometric pattern can be extended infinitely. When it is combined with the swastika, which means auspicious, the design means infinite auspicious.
The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" (meaning "good" or "auspicious") combined with "asti" (meaning "it is"), along with the diminutive suffix "ka." The swastika literally means "it is good."
